Bing and Carette pivoted their couplings on a small rivet which they flattened at the lower end. This takes considerable force. Instead, a semi-tubular rivet is supplied with each replica coupling. This is hollow at the end and easy to squeeze flat with a pair of pliers, giving a very good representation of the Bing/Carette method.

The original couplings are to be found on products once marketed by the original Bassett-Lowke company.
